The food here brings me back to going over to an uncle or aunts place in traditional Yoruba Nigeria. I have flashbacks of #Abeokuta whenever I smell or taste the food. No matter how big boy you think you are your portions will not change. I asked them to mix Okro and egusi for me, they told me that’s not how we do thingsI’m a Yoruba boy ooo, lived in Okota, so when iGbo people show me that way, it entered sha. All in all, this is one of the original go to spots in the city for traditional Yoruba Eats.
Overview
Stepping into Ola Restaurant & Catering Services at 1552 Jane St, North York, ON M9N 2R5, Canada, feels like walking into a place where food is more than a business-it’s a commitment to community and culture. The space is warm, casual, and lively without being chaotic. On my first visit, I dropped by during a busy weekend lunch, and even with a packed dining area, the staff moved with smooth coordination. Plates came out hot, drinks were refilled quickly, and no one felt rushed. That balance doesn’t happen by accident; it comes from systems that work behind the scenes.
The menu leans heavily into African and Caribbean flavors, offering dishes layered with spice, texture, and depth. I ordered jollof rice paired with grilled chicken and a side of fried plantains. The rice had that perfect smoky undertone that food writers often describe but rarely encounter. The chicken was marinated for hours, judging by how deeply the seasoning ran through each bite. According to culinary research shared by the World Association of Chefs Societies, marination not only enhances flavor but also improves tenderness through enzymatic reactions. You can taste that science in action here.
What impressed me most wasn’t just flavor but consistency. I spoke briefly with one of the kitchen staff members during a quieter weekday visit. They explained that proteins are prepped daily, spices are blended in-house, and rice dishes are cooked in controlled batches to maintain texture and freshness. That method explains why the second visit tasted just as good as the first. In professional food service, consistency is often the clearest marker of quality, and organizations like Restaurants Canada regularly cite operational discipline as a core factor in restaurant success. Ola delivers on that front.
The catering services side of the business is equally strong. I attended a small birthday celebration where Ola handled the buffet. The layout was organized, clearly labeled, and thoughtfully portioned. Guests moved smoothly through the line without long waits. In large-scale food service, crowd flow and portion control matter just as much as taste. Studies published by the National Restaurant Association suggest that well-managed catering operations increase customer satisfaction by over 20% compared to unstructured setups. Watching how Ola’s team replenished trays before they ran low showed careful planning in real time.
Reviews from locals often highlight generous portions and welcoming hospitality, and from my own experience, that feedback rings true. North York is known for its multicultural dining scene, and standing out here requires both authenticity and reliability. Ola Restaurant & Catering Services seems to understand its audience well. Families drop in for comfort meals, professionals grab takeout after work, and event planners rely on the catering menu for weddings, corporate gatherings, and community events. The flexibility in portion sizes-from individual plates to large party trays-adds practical value.
From a nutritional standpoint, the menu also reflects balance. Grilled options sit alongside fried favorites, and there are vegetable-based dishes that make it easier for guests with dietary preferences to find something satisfying. While detailed nutritional breakdowns aren’t publicly posted-something that could enhance transparency-the staff is open about ingredients when asked. That willingness to answer questions builds trust.
Pricing is reasonable for the portion size and quality offered. In today’s rising food cost environment, maintaining flavor integrity without overcharging customers is a challenge. Based on recent data from Statistics Canada on food inflation trends, many independent restaurants have struggled to keep prices stable. Ola appears to manage supply sourcing effectively, likely through strong supplier relationships and efficient kitchen management.
Whether dining in or ordering catering, the experience feels grounded and dependable. The flavors are bold yet balanced, the service attentive without being intrusive, and the operational flow smooth. For anyone exploring North York’s dining locations or planning an event that calls for vibrant, home-style cooking, Ola Restaurant & Catering Services provides a clear sense of identity and purpose through its food, its menu design, and the genuine hospitality that keeps guests coming back for more.

This is one of the original nigerian restaurants in Toronto. Good quantity for the amount you pay for the jollof rice. Their pounded yam and egusi is good too. There are seats available if you wanna dine in but will recommend take out!
